It was an historic event for the commissioner of Economic Development, Labour and Manpower Planning, Rt. Hon. (Barr) Ekong Sampson, when he recently paid an inspection visit to Eyulor community in Urueoffong/Oruko Local Government Area to see for himself projects implemented by the community through the intervention of Akwa Ibom State Agency for community and social development Project (AKS-CSDP)
The commissioner who commended the management and staff of AKS –CSDP said he was excited to be the first Commissioner to visit micro –projects sites implemented by Akwa Ibom State Agency for community and social development.
The Honourable Commissioner, in his remarks indicated that the partnership between the World Bank and the state government has yielded the successful completion of 171 micro –project across 22 LGA, of which Eyulor is a success. He promised the people that the Government of Akwa Ibom State will do more for the community but cautioned that the community should care for its facility.
The visit to Eyulor, is more than just the Ministry’s routine monitoring exercise, but what could be described as the inauguration of a completed health centre built by the Community Project Management Committee of Eyulor.
The choice by the community to construct a healthcentre as prioritized during the participatory field appraisal had a history of over 50 years. According to Mr. Francis Onobo, the Community Project Management Committee (CPMC) Chairman of Eyulor, the only health facility then in the community was a make shift leprosy centre at the entrance of the community which is no longer functional due to neglect.
Onobo who was gladdened by the construction of the health facility in Eyulor said it was a dream come true after half a century. Hepointed out that the choice of the health facility was driven by self-help initiative by the people of Eyulor to produce health for its citizen and to reduce infant and maternal mortality in the community.
The CPMCchairman prayed on the Commissioner to see to the up-grading of the health centre to point where vaccination would be administered to eradicate polio in Eyulor. He also charged good spirited individuals as well as the political class to use the facility to do free medical outreach to members of Eyulor and neighboring communities.
During the occasion, the General Manager of the State Agency,Mr. Ishmael J Akpan, applauded the State Government for fulfilling all the conditions set by the World Bank, which enabled the State come on board CSDP – Additional Financing. That the success recorded by the SA is as a result of government’s commitment and prayed for continuous support in this regards.
