PROVISION OF MOTORIZED BOREHOLE AT IKPE IKOT NTUEN COMMUNITY

The water situation of Ikpe Ikot Ntuen is not different from most rural communities in Nigeria, but through the intervention of Akwa Ibom State CSDP, both men and women, boys and girls have access to safe drinking water.

The motorized Borehole micro project initiated and part financed by Ikpe Ikot Ntuen community was achieved at the cost of N1, 925,000.00. This amount covers cost of geophysical survey, drilling, building of perimeter fence, generator house, concrete tank stand and a generator.

To man and operate the facility at Ikpe Ikot Ntuen motorized borehole is a young Nsikak Aniefiok Akpan, a Junior Secondary Pupil of Comprehensive Secondary School Ikpe Anang, Essien Udim LGA.  Nsikak , before going to school, opens the facility as early as 5.00 am, attends to community members who come for water and  he is diligent in collecting and  keeping records of sales of water. At the end of the day, he hands over the water proceeds to the community project committee.

According to Otobong Isaiah Ekanem a community member, the benefit of having safe drinking within a walking distance in the community far outweighs the N5.00 user fee charged per 20 litres. ‘we as community agreed on the amount, this is to ensure that the borehole serves us, the money is for maintenance and buying of fuel to pump water’ he hinted smiling.
