The Community and Social Development Project (CSDP) has assisted communities and vulnerable groups to execute 16,455 micro projects across the 29 states and the FCT, covering eight sectors of the rural economy of 586 Local Government Areas and Area Councils in the country.
National Coordinator of CSDP, Dr. Abdulkarim Obaje stated this while answering questions during the Radio Nigeria, Good Governance and Public Accountability audience participatory programme, “Have Your Say” which was broadcast on the network service of the Radio Nigeria from 10AM-11AM on Thursday, 18th June, 2020 and monitored in Abuja. He said of the 16,455 micro projects, the Water sector was the most highly subscribed with 4,480 projects.
Obaje gave the breakdown of the projects implemented to include 3,046 micro projects in Education, Health has 1,980 and rural transport has 1,852 micro projects. Others are Socio Economy projects constitutes 2,304 micro projects, Rural Electricity make up 1,725 micro projects, Environment and Natural Resource conservation has only 946 and Community Housing has 122 micro projects.
He further explained that the micro projects are construction of classrooms, science Laboratories, Health Centres, Water boreholes, Feeder roads, small bridges, Market stalls, Skills Acquisition Centres, provisions of Tricycles, grinding machines and many other micro projects.
Responding to a caller, Ada Odaza from Ila in Delta state who complained lack of electricity and good road Network in her community and appealed to the CSDP to come to the aid of the community, the National Coordinator explained that Delta state is not participating in CSDP but that there is a similar government project, SEEFOR which is implemented in the state. He however assured the caller to link her with SEEFOR for possible assistance.
On the rising case of rape in the country, Obaje said the CSDP has started talk with the NAPTIP for partnership on psychosocial support to rape victims. CSDP has had over 5000 psychosocial support sessions including those that affect COVID 19 cases.
He appreciated the leadership of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar and for the confidence she has on the CSDP. “The Minister has directed that the CSDP structure be used in the sensitization of gender and vulnerable people on COVID-19 and also the distribution of the Federal government palliatives during this lockdown” Obaje stated.
On the issue of rural electricity, the National Coordinator said the CSDP is in talks with the National Electricity Regulatory Commission so that communities that implemented electricity micro projects can benefit from a specialized tariff that is suitable to rural areas.
