EKCSDA TRAINS STAKEHOLDERS ON PSYCHO-SOCIAL SUPPORT (PSS)

Due to the recent widespread occurrence of behavioral misconduct especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ekiti State Community and Social Development Agency organised a training for various stakeholders on mental  Health and Psychosocial Support. Participants were drawn from the Ministry, Department and Agencies, Civil Society Organisations, Health officials in the Local governments, Community Development Officers and Security personnel both at the state and local government areas.

Participants were taken through Principles of Psychological First Aid in crisis situations with special emphasis on Gender Based Violence and ethics of Lay Counselling.

At the end of the about 4 hours programme, participants were excited that such a wonderful programme has brought to them new experiences especially at this critical time.

Mr. Akinsola from Oye Local government Primary Healthcare described the programme as very impactful and has contributed to their experiences on PSYCHO-SOCIAL situations. In his own words, Mr. Agidigbi Benjamin from the Health Department of Ikole Local government said "the workshop is very timely and so loaded with important knowledge to help me carry out my duties as a public health officer. It has also improved my communication skills when handling victims of social imbalances which are now rampant in our society."

Mr. Yusuf Odimayo, Head, Peace and Conflict Resolution Unit, NSCPC, said there was so much considerable overlap between protection of lives, mental health and provision of psychosocial support for vulnerable people. But with this workshop he said that has been globally and totally addressed.

In his own remarks, Pharmacists Kolawole Adetunji of the Ekiti State Ministry of health said, this is the first time he is attending a program like this. "Before now, I have associated EKCSDA only with physical infrastructural support to communities. It is only today that I know that the responsibility of the Agency also extends to giving Psychosocial support to victims of conflict and stress. It has really been a great exposure to me," he said.

Nelson Akerele of BIGIF foundation commended the design of the program because it factors in follow-up, referral, data capture, linkage education and participation.
